How the pace of science accelerates!
When I started writing the Twins’ story in 2008 I hadn’t heard of the idea of Quantum Computers. When I frst came across the theory it seemed, if not an impossible dream, then something out of Sciece Fiction for a distant future. By the time several years later I was finishng the first book, Ripped Apart, there were rumours of a secret development of a basic 4Qubit model being trialled.
Ordinary computers run on the basis of millions, billions, of yes/no answers, each answer having to be obtained in sequence. A quantum computer relies on “superpositioning”, where at each stage in the process both “yes” and “no” answers are held as possibilities until the end of the process is reached when a “chain” of “yesses” and “nos” is revealed. (That’smy take on it).
The speed of calculation is such that it is posited that a 256Qubit commputer would be capable of runnng the whole world!
Now IBM has a 5Qubit “working model”. Called IBM Quantum Experience, the development is not a full complete quantum processor just yet (this so far still doesn’t exist) but the one-of-a-kind system represents the latest advancement in quantum architecture. http://www.wired.co.uk/article/ibm-five-qubit-quantum-computer-cloud
And is developing a 20Qubit one!
Well, Professor Romain had better get going with upgrading his 8Qubit model!
